In the month of May...

There has been soooo much going on here this month. It's been crazy. There are a lot of things I'd love to do longer posts about, but I just don't know when I will get a chance. Instead, here's a timeline to show what our month has been like!

On May 3rd, Isaac turned 4 months. He is huge! or at least the muscles in my back and arms tink so!

Of course, the other kids needed a picture too.

On May 4th, we packed up for a little "vacation."

On the way, we stopped at a park to let the kids stretch their legs.

That evening, we arrived at my sister's house. She was kind enough to let me invite some of my college roommates for a little reunion.

The next day, we took the kids to the zoo. William was so excited to see the elephants-until we got a little closer. Then he was scared that they would "get" him and refused to stand where I could get a good picture of him and the elephants. We did get to watch them eat though. It was a lot of fun watching them pick up whole watermelons with their trunks.

William decided he likes giraffes better.

The next day was not as much fun. William had to have surgery on his feet. This was his 4th surgery for clubbed feet. Not so much fun, but he was a real trooper. He spent the night in the hospital and was released the next day. We spent that afternoon and evening visiting some of Aaron's family. They were kind enough let us stay the night. I guess I was too tired to take pictures... We arrived back at home the evening of the 8th.

With everything going on, we had pretty much forgotten Mother's day, but I did buy myself some chocolate dipped strawberries and shared them with my mom. Aaron caught something and spent the day in bed.

Tuesday, May 12th was a fun day! Sort of...

For the fun part, I got my haircut! Whoo hoo! The heat here has been breaking records, and I just couldn't handle it any more. So, here's the before...

The less fun part of the day was driving for 4 hours because William had to go back to Primary Children's to have his casts changed. We slept at my aunt's house and got up early the next moring to head to the hospital. William was actually pretty good about most of it. He was a bit grumpy about not getting breakfast, but he was getting anethesia and had to have an empty stomach. He was released by noon and we stopped to have lunch with my sister before heading home again.

The following day, May 14th, Isaac had his 4 month check-up. He weighed 17lbs 3.5oz (90%) and is 25 inches tall (50%). He has a rash on his face that I thought was just dry skin, but hadn't been able to clear up. The doctor thinks he is allergic to something that his skin is in contact with. So we will be trying some different laundry soap to see if that helps. Other than that, he is a happy, healthy boy!

Today, May 19th, is Leonora's birthday. Hopfully I'll get a chance to post more about that later!

Summer Haircuts!

Well, it's that time of year. The weather is getting warmer, and my kids needed haircuts, so the other night, (almost) everyone got one! Leonora's ended up being a little shorter than I intended, but she always looks cute anyway. Next was William, who hates the buzzer, but got it for a short summer 'do, and last was Aaron, who just got a trim, and dosn't like me taking pictures of him anyway. Maybe I'll get him later.

Now, I think it's my turn!

A Sewing Project

This is a quilt that I finished a couple weeks ago. I made the top over a year ago, but hadn't gotten around to tying and finishing it until recently. Here it is on Leonora's bed. Cute, huh?

Happy Earth Day!!!

I got these re-usable grocery bags today. I'm so sick of plastic bags. In the past, I've used them for small trash liners, reused them as packing material, and saved them up for schools who recycle them for fundraisers. Lately, though, I've had way too many of them showing up in random parts of the house. The kids seem to think they are toys. So I'm really glad to have fewer of them coming into our home!

Another great thing about these bags is that I got them for 59 cents with a coupon from Albertson's!

Some Video of Isaac

Isaac is 15 weeks.

This is Isaac laughing. This is a relatively new skill for him, and it's so fun for us! I love his high pitched squawks, the way he opens his mouth before he laughs, and that he keeps eating his fists regardless of what I am doing! You can see he rolls onto his side in the video. He has started rolling from back to front in the last few days, but we have yet to capture it on video. He still hasn't rolled from front to back.

Isaac is also a very social and talkative baby. I love his baby talk! He's been "talking" for quite a while, but he always gets quiet when I get the camera out. This is the most I've been able to get on camera. The first 30 seconds or so are the best.

Easter Fun

This Easter we had a cold going around our family. And it rained. So our kids missed out on the usual egg hunt at my grandmother's home. Instead, we stayed home and decorated some cookies! First we had to get our suplies together: Frosting, food coloring, knives for spreading, and of course, cookies!



Next, it was time to frost those cookies! William chose blue. Unlike pink, purple, and green, blue is a "Superman" color.



Next we pulled out the sprinkles for a little added decor!



And presto! Easter cookies! Aren't they lovely?

Isaac's Pacifier Adventure

Our other kids have taken pacifiers without a problem. In fact, William was quite crabby without one for a long time. Leonora wasn't crabby without one, but did use them in the car and to fall asleep. Isaac just doesn't seem to see any appeal in them.

First, we tried these "Soothies."

He gagged on them.

Next it was a Playtex "Binky."

These didn't make him gag, but he wouldn't suck on it either.


I thought we'd give it one more shot. Third time is the charm, right? So I bought some "Nuk" pacifiers.

Those stayed in his mouth for a whole 5 seconds!

I love good deals!!

Yesterday I went grocery shopping. You know how at the bottom of the reciept, it says how much you saved on your shopping trip? It's been a "game" lately to see how much I can "save." Yesterday was a win! I spent $100.77 and saved $107.75!! A lot of what I bought isn't stuff I need this week, but I know we'll eat it and it can be stored or frozen until then. I've been useing a site called Grocery Smarts. It tells me what sales are worth stocking up on and where to find coupons that make an even better deal! Right now the site includes stores for Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. Hopefully, it will spread to other states soon! In the meantime, anyone in these areas should check it out! There are also classes that you can take to help maximize your savings. If you are in the St George/Cedar City area, go to Southern Utah Grocery gal's blog (the link is in my sidebar, "Grocery shopping savings...") to find out when and where her classes are. They are free and very helpful.

Leonora and the butterfly

This is Leonora's wind-up butterfly.



She found it one day when we were packing and cleaning our old apartment.

Fresh Strawberry Pie

This is my mom's recipe. I love it! I've decided what makes this simple recipe so good is the lemon!

Ingrediants:

1 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
2 T cornstarch
Juice of 1 lemon
2 lbs strawberries
large pie crust

Mix sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl until well blended. Set aside. Take 3-4 strawberries and smash. Bring water to a boil. Add sugar mixture to water. Blend thoroughly while still cooking. Add juice of 1 lemon. Remove from heat and let cool. Add smashed strawberries. Hull remaining strawberries and place in large pie crust. Pour water/sugar mixture over strawberries. Refrigerate 1-2 hours or until ready to serve.

It's great served with whipped cream! I am lazy, so I usually buy the pie crust. My favorite to use is a shortbread crumb crust, but this is grahm cracker crumb. Enjoy!

Two Months!

Time has gotten away from me! I didn't even realize that I hadn't posted about Isaac's 2 month check up!



Isaac has gotten huge! At least, he seems huge to me. If you were carrying him around all the time, he'd seem huge to you too!! He had his 2 month check up last week and is doing well. He weighed in at 14lbs even (95th percentile) and was 23 1/2 inches long(75th percentile). He has a slightly flat spot on the back right side of his head, so we are trying to encourage him to turn more to the left. Other than that and a case of craddle cap, he's a happy healthy little boy!

First Impressions

Sunday was the first time we attended our new ward. There were a lot of visitors. We kind of blended in with all the other new faces, but I'm sure we'll atract a little more attention next week.

We arrived on time-quite the feat for our family-and settled in for a mostly enjoyable sacrament meeting. When it was time for Sunday School, the first order of business was finding out which rooms the kids were suposed to be in. I found the primary room and took William in to ask where his room was. One member of the presidency took him off to his class. As I was being led away to the nursery with Leonora, I realized that I hadn't mentioned his name. I hoped to myself that he wouldn't be too shy and would introduce himself. After all, he knows his name! I then repeated Leonora's name two or three times to the nursery leader. She can't say her own name. Incredibly enough, when she tries, it comes out a few syllables too long.

The rest of our meetings went well. Isaac stayed asleep the whole time. I found out that a couple who were in my ward when I was a little girl are in this ward. They have children close to my age and it was fun to catch up a little. It's nice to see someone familiar in a new congregation.

After church, we set off to find our children. Aaron found William and brought him to where I picked up Leonora. They both seemed happy and to have had a good time, and both had colored pictures for us. As we loaded into the car, I looked a little more closely at William's paper. I instantly regretted not introducing him properly!

Moved!

Just thought I'd let you all know that we are now residing in our new home! So far, we are very happy with the increased space and asthetics. We've still got a bit of unpacking to do, but it is starting to feel more like a home and less like a storage unit with a kitchen! :) I have some pictures to share, but don't have the time at the moment. We've been busy, so I have lots to post about but not the time to do it. This will have to do for the moment!

Isaac's Blessing

Isaac was blessed in chuch on Sunday. I miraculously finished the outfit I was working on for him. Well, all but the buttons, but I think it turned out pretty good even with no buttons! The blessing was very nice! Aaron and I both had a lot of family who were able to attend. It was nice to have so many of them there with us! Here are a few pictures!

Just an experience I wanted to share...

Sunday, I went to the cemetary to remove the evergreen wreath and replace it with a valentines themed one. The new one probably won't be there for too long, but the Christmas one needed to come down. Anyway, I often see one or two other people visiting the cemetary when I go, especially on Sunday afternoons, however, yesterday was a very wet and rainy day here. I probably wouldn't have gone if it weren't the only practical day for me to go before Valentine's. I really didn't expect to see anyone there in the rain, but while I was hanging the new wreath, someone drove to the next cemetary "block" over and stood by a new grave. I knew that there had been a funeral on Saturday. The man who died has a daughter in my high school graduating class. She isn't someone I knew well, but in a graduating class of only 130 students, it's unusual not to at least know names and faces. It was her that I saw standing by the grave.

One of the things I've gotten out of my experience with Renee is a deep sympathy for others' grief. When I see people experiencing a big loss in their life, I just really want to help them. Of course, I always felt bad for people before, but I think I aproached it differently than I used to. There are so many thing that people say that help so little. In fact there are a lot of things that people say with good intentions that end up just making a person feel worse. The things that helped me were those looks from certain people. I have no idea what some of these people's experiences have been, but there's a look that people who have felt a terrible loss have when they tell you they are sorry about your loss. I don't really know how to explain it, but you just know that they've been through these emotions before. It's a look of understanding and compasion. Those looks, along with brief expressions of sympathy, gave me much more comfort than anything that anyone said. I know that I'll see Renee again. After she was burried, I "knew" that someday I wouldn't feel so miserable, but I couldn't see the end of my grief. I was told that the first year is the worst, but I couldn't imagine waking up after that first anniversary was past and feeling better about my daughter being gone. Seeing that look was a testimony to me that there would be a time I'd feel better about it. It was a look that said, "Yes, what you are going through is terrible, but it will pass. I know because I've been there." I imagine that it's the look Christ would give us if we were telling him about our trials face to face.

So when I saw my former classmate standing over her father's grave, I felt compelled to at least attempt to give her some of what had helped me. I didn't say much. Her grief is still very new, so I doubt she remembers much of what I did say, but I hope that I was able to share with her some of what was shared with me. Some Hope for the future, and, even if it was only for a few minutes, a friend.

Isaac is one month old!

Isn't that amazing?! The last 4+ weeks have flown by for me!

Isaac had his 4 week check up today. He weighs 11lbs, 2 oz and is 22 inches long! His head is about 15 1/2 inches around.

The doctor's verdict: One "Healthy Hunk!"

I'd like to add that he's a handsome little hunk as well!

Happy Birthday to me! and other news

Well, I'm another year older! Ack!! I had a very nice birthday. Aaron and I went out to the movies and dinner and the next day I made a cake. William was a bit distressed that we didn't have any on my birthday.

I've been waiting to post because I wanted to let you all know that we did get aproved for the new apartment! I found out this morning, and that's probably the most exciting (late) birthday present! :) We'll be siging the lease and getting keys on the 13th!

Another fun tidbit is that we openned savings accounts for each of the kids last week! William has been very busy finding ways to help out around the house and earn some pennies. I'm hoping that he'll keep it up and be helpful while we are packing up to move!
